Policy

Alcohol and drug policy

Working on scaffolding requires full concentration. That is why zero tolerance of alcohol and drugs applies on all our projects.

Purpose

This policy protects the health and lives of our workers, clients and people around the site. Alcohol, drugs and some medicines reduce attention and reaction time – when working at height, the consequences can be fatal.

Who it applies to

All employees, self-employed contractors and anyone else working on our projects. It applies during working hours and breaks, on site and during travel to and from the project. The ban on illegal drugs applies for the entire stay on a project, including accommodation.

What is prohibited

  • starting work or being on site under the influence of alcohol, narcotic or psychotropic substances – including residual alcohol from the previous day,
  • consuming alcohol or drugs during working hours and breaks,
  • bringing, keeping or supplying alcohol or drugs on site,
  • using, keeping or supplying illegal drugs during a stay on a project,
  • driving a company vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other addictive substances.

Testing

A team leader or company management may carry out a breath test for alcohol or a drug test at any time. Refusing a test is treated the same as a positive result. Anyone who is under the influence, or reasonably suspected of being so, may not continue working and is removed from the site immediately.

Medication

Anyone taking medication that may reduce attention (for example causing drowsiness) must tell their team leader in advance. Together we will agree whether they can work safely, and on which tasks.

Consequences

A breach of this policy is a serious breach of work discipline or contractual obligations. It may lead to immediate termination of employment or cooperation. Possession or dealing of illegal drugs is reported to the police.

Support

If someone has a problem with alcohol or other substances and comes forward early, we will support them. We treat all information confidentially and will help them find professional support – usually starting with a visit to their GP.
